I clutched the blanket and stayed still, hoping the lightning would stop and let me breathe. “What do you want to read?” He asked, wrapping his arm around me and pushing me flush against his chest. I was almost lying on top of him. He must have not seen how red my face was as he scrolled through the fiction section on Kindle. “I am not in the right position to read.” “I will read it to you.” I couldn’t miss a chance like this. “Romance,” I said in my best I-am-scared-of-lightening-please-read-me-something voice. Then added, “With some steam.”

She continued flipping to the next page. “Well you had better not let the book take up all of your time. You know we still have chores to carry out.” “Whatever,” she replied playfully with an eyeroll. Now she sat cross-legged on the bed, eyes sparkling as she read aloud, her voice stumbling over a few words but never losing its eagerness. “‘The knight… rode into the… the dark forest,’” she sounded the words carefully, lips moving slowly as she traced the lines with her finger. “He wasn’t… afraid, even though the trees were… whispering secrets.”

He is reading on a bench, a backpack sat beside him and a takeaway coffee sat next to him as he reads. “So, close your eyes and try to zone in on him only” I do as she instructs, at first it’s hard as the voices are loud, each praying for different things. Pointing to her next note, she informs, “Books state men have anxiety about ejaculating on demand, so some practice will help.” I pull out my iPhone, open my Kindle App, scroll a few times, find the book I want, then hand my phone to Kennedy. “Here, you read this and bye-bye any anxiety Jackson might have.” Kennedy squeals as my cell phone plummets to the carpet. Jackson grabs up my phone to see what I shared. “Seriously?” He asks me. “You read this smut?” I offended him with my suggestion, but soon the hilarity seeps upon his face.

In the next few days, her life is going to change forever. As she rips off the wrapping paper, I tell her, “It’s fully charged, and I uploaded your favorite version.” A smile spreads across her face when she realizes what it is. Shannen enjoys reading so much. But her electronic book is so old I am surprised it still works. “Not only is it the latest model, but it also has a back-light for reading in the dark.” I brag. She turns on the e-reader and I go to close the curtains. I sat next to her to show her how it works. She squeals with delight as the device lights up. I could see Shannen’s beaming smile. I knew then I had chosen a perfect present for her.
