I nodded in agreement as Lars came up to us. “No offense but I’d rather Lady Kerrienne get some sleep since she seems to be the only one of us with the power to go up against Alastair.” “I conquer.” Emrick sighed, wrapping his arms around me and drawing me in for a scorching kiss that left me unable to draw in enough air. Lars cleared his throat. “Perhaps you should go with her laird, you’re newly wed after all.” He left out that not all of us might survive the battle tomorrow but it was implied.

The air was heavy with copper and smoke. Lars stood across from him, grinning despite the gash down his side. “This isn’t over,” Lars said, his voice too calm for the blood on his hands. “I’ll tear down your walls, stone by stone. And when I find her…” His smile sharpened. “…she won’t hide from me.” Carlos tightened his grip on the blade, every muscle in his body trembling with the need to strike again. To end this. But Lars was already retreating, his men dragging back into the shadows of the forest, their howls fading into the night.

But unexpectedly, Keelin suddenly stretched out to look at the door “Is Valor coming?” Lars immediately pulled Keelin back, rolled his eyes, and said: “I told her, not you.
