I now realize Scarlett must have lied. She said a life-threatening event would turn Kitty Kat back into a mermaid, but maybe Scarlett made that up?

Kitty’s cheeks turned a deep red and her face dropped to the floor. “You dropped something,” Rick said, bending to the floor at the same time. "That's not mine!" she said a little too defensively.

She shook her head, glancing at her wristwatch. “I’ve got class,” she said, standing abruptly. Her tray clattered as she gathered her things, her movements sharp, hurried.

The smell hits me, and I grimace. "Audrey," I say in a warning tone, "that better not be—" "TEQUILA!" She yells and I groan. Tequila is the sure-fire way to get me both hammered and horny, and she damn well knows this. "Come on, Kat," she says in her sweetest voice, pouting at me then grinning at Dan. She passes Mark a glass. "Why are there five?" I ask her.

“Wait… Are you scared of cats?” “No, I am not,” I say firmly, keeping as much distance as I can. Her brows lift. “Then why did you just jump away like that?” “I didn’t jump—” “Oh, look, kitty, seems like the great Kyle Sinclair is scared of you,” she teases in a baby voice. The cat meows as if agreeing with her. “For the record, I am not scared of cats,” I grumble. “And I did not jump away.” I point at the thing still nestled in her arms. “That thing is dangerous.”
