Sera listened without interrupting. "The novel," Kael continued, "described this world's major events across seven volumes. I know what happens in the next decade because I read it as a completed story. I know about your Oath Contract because it was part of that story, mentioned but never explained. I know about the Pale Arbiter because the author used that name once and never returned to it." He stopped. "I am not," he said, "the person Varen Dreadmourne wrote that letter to. I am someone else, using his son's body, trying to survive in a world I read about but do not fully understand."

‎Hours pass. ‎I don’t eat. ‎Don’t move. ‎Just think. ‎About Caleb. ‎About Elias. ‎About how they must be losing their minds right now. ‎About how Mikhail thinks this is love. ‎It’s not. ‎It’s obsession. ‎Pure. ‎Dark. ‎Terrifying. ‎And I’m drowning in it. ‎The front door slams sometime later. ‎Footsteps. ‎Heavy. ‎Mikhail. ‎He’s home. ‎ ‎Mikhail’s POV

Axel PoV The miracle I had hoped would happen when I was holed up in my room, happened in Maximo’s cave. I found the traitor that almost tore apart my pack, I got Maximo’s neck off my neck, and I figured out a way to find leverage over him so he doesn’t have me on his leash anymore. All in all, the future was looking good for me; for Klaus? Not so much. “You’ve been silent,” Klaus said during the trip home.

"Hezekiah killed Tia Valeria. Right in front of you. I don't know how I'd be able to keep it together." Mikael was brought back to that night in the woods - the night Abraham was released from his underground imprisonment. It was a trauma that Mikael had to live with for the rest of his life, not only seeing Hezekiah kill Tia Valeria but seeing vampires murder your House members - people you thought of as family. This hurt him deeply. So much so that he couldn't speak about it anymore. We ended our conversation there; Mikael resumed looking out of the window with a new set of thoughts torturing his mind. When we reached a fork in the road, I knew that we had arrived. I took the left road and

I groaned and tried to forcefully yank my hands away, but that only made things more awkward. "Leave me, you bloody mo—" "Monster!" he completed my words in a calm drawl, which caused my body to shiver with fear. I was already close; too close to him, and even with my fragile anger, he looked unfazed. I badly want to gouge his eyes out, yet my skin prickled against my body. His scent engulfed me in ways I want to hate. Mikael smiled. A smile filled with so much ill intent, and I tried my best to figure out what was in his head; however, he is like a book that doesn't want to be read unless he says otherwise.

Then the battle truly began. Two demons. One enemy. Leif fought with dark magic and desperation, but he was only one. And then— Slow clapping. A familiar voice cut through the chaos. “Well done, boys.” A figure emerged from the smoke. Unharmed. Smiling. Alpha MAELRIK. The true architect. “You may have won this round,” he said calmly, “but it isn’t over.” Then— He vanished. Leif lay dead at their feet. Damien and Cris stared at the empty space.

“I was a royal, but royals no longer exist. Now, I’m just a Halo master.” I pat Alex on the back. “And I’m the same smart-ass kid you fostered years ago.” Alex rolls his eyes. “You’re definitely a smartass.” The front door opens a moment later, admitting Mikhail, Azazel, Carrick, and Kell. “Alex!” Mikhail calls out happily. Kell and Carrick give me the once over before they turn to Alex and greet him. Alex pats them all on the back and gestures for everyone to come in. Mikhail’s the first one to notice Tristan. “Who are you?” He asks. Leave it to Mikhail to not beat around the bush and wait for an introduction.

"I know." Reese lifted his leg and knocked my buttocks with his knee. I gave him a pat on the arm for it, but before we could really start fighting - not that we ever did - a man in his early thirties stepped out from between the cubicles and came up to us smiling. He wore glasses and had his hair cut so short that I couldn't tell whether it was dark blonde or brown. He seemed to have a slight posture, which he hunched a little, but wow, the muscles that were visible under his sweater certainly didn't come from chilling on the couch. "Hi." He nodded to me and held out his hand to Reese. "I'm Anton Faust and you have to be Reese Tack, the Venator from the guild in Berlin."

But I couldn't go against Mikel's orders, knowing he was the king and wouldn't mind punishing Alana and Aiden. I thought if Mikel could banish his own family, whom he had known for years, just because of betrayal, then what about his children, whom he had just met recently? "Okay, I will read it for you," I said. I collected the novel and saw it was a male book about a prince who could defeat many dragons and couldn't be easily killed. I felt the storybook had something to tell about Mikel's origin, so I flipped through the pages and started reading the story to Aiden.

I had to take my mind off of Damien. There was a lot in the book, but it was just as Klaus said, there is nothing on White Cliffs, not even a mention of a home. Well not so far anyway. But it was interesting to learn Aldous’s thought process. The detail that he goes into is fascinating and yet somehow, he omits a lot of information.
