Redemption’s Sweet Surprise
My trowel hit metal with a soft clink.
I froze. The old, familiar dread surged, cold and instant. Not again. Please, not again.
Carefully, I brushed away the damp soil. It wasn't a capsule or a box. It was a simple, old-fashioned tobacco tin, rusted at the seams. It had been buried shallowly, recently. The soil around it was looser than the undisturbed clay.
This wasn't my mother's. This was new.
With shaking hands, I pried it open. Inside, cushioned on a bed of dried moss, was a single, flawless black pearl. And beneath it, a slip of rice paper.
