Underfoot, the layer of dry leaves crinkled, their short lived beauty of green, red, and shades of yellow orange, all faded to a uniform brown, their last stage before crumbling back into the arms of the earth. How quickly and easily she felt at home. Her cat purred in excitement, kneading her claws at the edge of her mind, raring to go. Jiao tilted her head back, closed her eyes and spread her arms. She inhaled deep. "I love fall," she admitted. "You do?" Chris sounded surprised.

The Night That Changed Everything It was early November when the air began to shift. The leaves outside the school turned brittle and gold, and the sun dipped below the horizon too early, painting the sky in dusty pinks and smudged purples. Fall had always made me feel strange — like I was both waking up and saying goodbye to something at the same time. Maybe that’s why the memories from that month have stayed so sharp. Because deep down, I knew. I knew something was coming. I just didn’t know how much it would change me.

Francesca’s POV As we approached mid-September, the Fall weather really began to set in. The unbearable heat of the previous month was abating with every second that passed. The leaves of the trees were changing color, losing their life force and vividness, and falling to the ground in a melancholic but beautiful display of the wonders of nature.

I can't imagine what had happened to her. As we drive from the neighborhood, we watch neighbors decorate their house for the upcoming holiday. A sigh of relief escapes me and I lean back in my seat to prop my feet out the window. Finally, we’re getting away. Those extra hours Jim and I put in over the summer really paid off. We knew that when everybody came back from summer vacation, we would have no problem getting away for the Fall, the best time of the year. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves and being one with nature.

We talked about the changing seasons in detail, how the crisp air signaled the arrival of cozy nights, hot drinks, and layering up against the wind, and shared stories of favorite fall activities from childhood—like jumping in massive piles of raked leaves or carving intricate patterns into pumpkins for Halloween. By the time we returned to the townhouse, the evening felt complete, a perfect blend of good food, laughter, and fresh air, leaving us both in high spirits for the night ahead. That night I fell asleep with my head on his thighs.

The autumn that followed was a long, slow exhale. The fierce colors of the bluff softened to rust and ochre, and the air grew sharp with the scent of woodsmoke and decaying leaves. The bustle of summer was a memory; the town settled into its slower, more thoughtful self. We did too.

I didn't have a room. "Skylar!" Hearing his voice had my heart racing with fear, I walked down the stairs to meet him in the hallway. There was a door under the stairs, probably to the basement which is where they made me sleep last time. My step-father stood there with the door open. Suddenly he shoved me and I slipped, falling down each step. Rolo barked and growled at him, earning a kick for himself before he too got locked in the basement with me. I swear I heard him lock it with a key. There were three lights down here, they were fairly dim, the floor had been carpeted thankfully, a single mattress lay in one corner of the room no bedframe, a dog bed next to it with the dogs food and wa

"The radio station isn't Jessica's personal territory and is owned by the military. If she can't understand that, she doesn't deserve to wear the uniform," Samson said to Celia, firmly and confidently. "But Jess hasn't been home in days. I don't want you two fighting because of me," Celia said. "She's just being stubborn. This isn't about you," Samson replied. Then, the whole mood changed as I heard Celia laughing. "Sam, don't let go! Hold on, I'm going to fall! Ah…! I'm falling! Sam! Catch me!"

The night was coming for them. And this time, it was personal.
