Lena's POV. “Hello, ma'am,” the doctor waved his left hand, and felt my pulse with his right hand. “How many fingers am I holding up?” “Can I get a name? Can you speak?” He continued, not even giving me a chance to think or respond. He suddenly stopped and pointed a little fluorescent light in my eyes. I squinted and groaned inaudibly from lying stiff for far too long. “Four, My name is Lena, and I think I can… talk,” I replied in a second, gulping as the man behind him moved closer and fixed his gaze on me.

Then she carried the book to the nearest reading table and sat down and opened it without ceremony, because if fate had written her a contract, the least she could do was read the terms. The book assumed considerable prior knowledge, in the way of very old scholarship that considered background context a reader's own problem. But Lena had been reading texts with gaps since she was twelve, filling in what was missing from context and inference, and she worked through the opening chapters with patient, accumulating attention. She arrived at the third chapter — The Convergent Case: When the Soul Holds More Than One Mark — and her reading slowed and became something considerably more personal. S

I read through the list again and see the term immobilisation. My eyes flick up to hers to a second, she gives me a small nod, she knows what’s in the book. I wonder can she read it too. “GeGe, is it only our bloodline that can read the book?” I link carefully, flicking my eyes back to the book then direct out loud. “Page one hundred and thirty-four.”

“She stays with me until she’s done having that baby. Once the child is out, I will give both Sienna and the kid back. And you can do whatever the fuck you want with them. But I'm not letting you rape a pregnant woman under my watch." Luthor’s face morphs into complete, dark dissatisfaction. He shakes his head slowly, eyes going cold. "We’ve been friends for too long to let this kind of stupid bullshit get between us, Arsher. But you're giving me absolutely no choice here. I won't have you taking her out of this field." Luthor snaps his eyes toward the big guy standing to his left. "Gunna!" In that exact second, Gunna shifts his stance, pointing his heavy barrel straight at my forehead.
