FORGOTTEN IDENTITY
Eli had apparently spent several weeks creating it, a carefully compiled guide to the insects of our garden, illustrated with his own precise drawings and annotated with the specific, detailed observations he'd been collecting for years.
On the first page, in his careful handwriting, he'd written: For Hope, who knows the difference between important and interesting, and has always been both.
Hope read this, and then read it again, and then set the book down on the table with an expression I hadn't seen on her before, the slightly stunned look of someone who has received something more precisely accurate than they'd anticipated.
"Eli," she said.
"You've always been interested in the garden,"
