The stairs up to the apartment might as well have been Everest. Lily didn't slow. She hit the back door, unlocked it, and shoved it open. "Inside. Now. Bleed wherever you want, just not on the art." They fell together in a tangle of limbs and blood and wrecked clothing, dragged down by gravity and exhaustion in equal measure. The glow from the UVs stained their skin in harsh purples and deep red-orange, catching along cuts that hadn't sealed yet. Sweat shined across bruises that hadn't faded. Nothing about it was comfort. Just distance from the world. Just silence. Just space to breathe.
