I turned around and realized the faintest wisp of it was curling out from under a door halfway down the hall. I ran. Didn’t think. Didn’t breathe. Just reached the door and threw it open. Smoke billowed out, thick and gray. But it wasn’t a fire. It was incense. Dozens of sticks burning all at once inside a small library I’d never seen before. The windows were shut. Curtains drawn. It looked like a shrine. A shrine to death. Photos lined the shelves. Men and women in black-and-white frames. Burnt candles. Stacks of folded notes, many with the same name written across the top: Rafael Aragon.
