Tara didn’t know what Maggie was about to say but she got the feeling it was something she didn’t want to hear. “Now, that mare over there,” Maggie continued. “She’s your love like Angus was mine, right?” “I guess so,” Tara said hesitantly. Her heart beat erratically as realization of what Maggie was leading up to set in. “This is serious,” Maggie stressed. “There’s a field full of demon beasts out there and the leader is out there looking for a way to get ya away just like we’re looking for a way to keep ya safe. I nodded in agreement and then went to take a seat at one of the booths closer to the counter as we waited for our food. I took a chair facing away from Zaire's table on purpose just to avoid looking at him and his idiot friends.

Zayden immediately lifted the covers instead of slapping, just as she told him to. In the living room, Maggie was watching TV with her legs crossed. She was holding a dragon fruit in one head and changing the channel with the remote. As she heard the door slam behind her, she asked, “Can I turn around now?” Flushing, Alice asked in surprise when throwing a pillow at Maggie, “How did you get in here?” Maggie raised her hand and precisely caught the pillow. She spun around, smiled at Alice, and asked, “Did you know that our house balconies are connected? I stay right next door from you.”

He was a tall, thin guy with red curly hair, glasses, and braces, and I immediately wondered why a mage wouldn’t just fix his teeth and his eyes, but then I remembered that I was there to answer questions, not ask them. Maggie came in with a cart full of glasses, ice, and a pitcher of water. She gave Mage Jaye a glass first, then me, and then Ben, before she asked the students if they would like any. All of them said no thank you except for the last guy who’d come in. Once Maggie was done, Mage Jaye cleared her throat, and I took a long swallow of water, glad to have something to sooth my throat. It was drier than I had realized.
