Chapter Twelve The door closed behind me with a whoosh and I moved as quickly as my heels would allow to the ringing phone. “Thank you for calling the office of Marcus Blackwell, how can I help you?” I asked in my best customer service voice, trying not to sound too out of breath as I sat down and picked up my pen to take down any notes. “I was hoping you would answer,” the husky voice at the end of the line chuckled and I frowned in confusion. This voice wasn’t familiar, and it was super creepy.

On the other hand, Nigel looked at Sabrina calmly and said, “You may answer the phone first.” Sabrina reacted in time, “Uh…Two right six, you could transfer it over.” The receptions ran off in a flash. Sabrina’s landline rang not long after, and she picked up the call, “Hello, may I know who is speaking?” “Sabrina, I am Marcus,” said Marcus, who was on the other end. Sabrina did not recognize Marcus’ voice at first. He seemed to have caught a cold as he had a thick nasal tone. Over on this end, Sabrina asked, “Uh… What happened to your voice?”

“Why don’t you ask him yourself?” I stare at the phone for a moment, hesitating. Then, with a shaky hand, I pick it up, bringing it to my ear. “H-hello?” “Mercy.” Marcel’s deep and familiar voice resonates through the small speaker, washing over me. “Are you okay?”

Tonight, it left him unmoved. He stepped into a quieter passage lined with abstract paintings that served as little more than camouflage and dialed Marisol. The call connected on the third ring. “Hello?” A man’s deep voice, lazy and amused. Marvin’s grasp tightened. “Is Marisol there?” “Yeah. Who’s this? “Marvin Gale. Put Marisol on.” “She’s in the bathroom.” A pause filled with the low thump of bass. “Anything I may assist with, big daddy?”

Marcus typed another command into the laptop before grabbing one of the phones and dialing somebody. “No, I need the last transmission point.” He listened. “I already have the account information.” Another pause. “Call me back when you find it.” The line disconnected. Alexander watched him. “Anything.” “Not yet.” Marcus had been at this for over an hour — calls, messages, contacts and every lead seemed to end exactly where it started. Alexander pulled out his phone again. Voicemail. Marcus finally glanced up. “You know she can’t answer if somebody took the phone.”

Martin swallowed and pressed the phone back to his ear. "I'm going to have to call you back." The person on the phone didn't sound happy but he hung up anyway. The phone hit the floor and the pen soon followed.

Marcos pov “Pick up, Mother.” I press the phone harder against my ear like that’s going to force her to answer. The fog sits heavy on the street, swallowing sound, swallowing movement, but my eyes stay locked on the townhouse across from me. The line keeps ringing, Once…Twice…Three times, nothing!!! My jaw tightens, I pull the phone away and stare at the screen, then dial again immediately. “Pick up.” My voice comes out lower this time, she knows the signal.

He walked back to his seat and put the phone which was ringing on loud loudspeaker. The phone kept ringing and went into voicemail. Marcus fixed his eyes on me. “Why is she not picking up my calls?” “I…she.. is currently not at home,” I answered. “I know, I have been monitoring you for days now!” He yelled. His voice made me flinch. He dialed the number again. She answered this time. Since the phone was still on speaker, we could all hear the sound of loud music blasting through the phone. This was a total mistake.
