Early the next morning, I took my daughters to my parents’ house. When I returned, Jaxon and Rykel were still asleep, snoring like thunder. There were several missed calls on my phone that I hadn’t noticed because it was on silent. All of them were from Dominic. "The injuries are really severe this time. The girls’ faces are completely ruined." His tone was unusually grave. My hand felt ice-cold as I held the phone, my palm slick with sweat. In my previous life, I had been the one suffering. Perhaps it was the chill of the towel or the heat of the fire that made Mark open his eyes slowly, and right before him was an inferno. “You’re awake? I couldn't help the burst of laughter that came out. Unbelievable, I would never have imagined he'd done that. Despite being a little awkward, he soon joined me in my laughter. When we stopped laughing, I decided to turn on the radio. Throughout the trip, we maintained that pleasant silence again, filled only by Latin music, and I even felt lighter.
