The night swallowed its breath, the entire guests on the marble steps turned, their mouths open, their phones lifted, whispers detonated.
Matteo materialized beside me. “Cap, everything is in place. The snipers on the roof, and the men are fixed on every exit. It’s a walk in, and walk out operation.”
Elena’s gaze snapped to us. She’d caught what Matteo said in English so I switched to rapid Italian for the rest. Her eyes narrowed—she hated being left out—but she hated me too—but she pressed her lips together and said nothing.

I took her hand, threaded our fingers, and walked up the steps like I owned the world.
