A middle-aged man and a younger man burst into the room. I didn’t recognize either of them. “Lily, you’re awake? Let me see you!” The young man, who didn’t seem like the emotional type, suddenly acted like a frantic child. He pushed the woman aside and tried to hug me. I pulled back, uneasy. “Hey, who are you? Don’t just grab people like that.” He froze as if struck by lightning, his whole body trembling. The middle-aged man went rigid too. His voice shook as he said, “She’s really lost her memory? Why would God punish me like this? She’s my only daughter. I never even had the chance to make things right.”

he said, dragging the two men along towards where the bodies of the other two were. He dumped them and turned to me. "So I will be teaching you how to wipe their memories and manipulate them," he said, stretching out his hand towards me. "We’ll start with the first guy and make our way down, as he has the smallest memory of the group and should be easier to manipulate," he explained, and I nodded. "So you lift them up like this," he said, demonstrating by lifting the first man. "Open your eyes," he spoke to the man, and he slowly, grouchily opened his eyes.

"When you get your memories back, will you regret this?" His gaze held mine. "I don't regret any decision I've made." "Even if my memories return, I won't change my mind. Monday. I expect you at the Mark Removal Center. Don't be late." I nodded. "Fine." He didn't say another word and turned to leave. My head was a mess, but old habits kicked in and I instinctively moved to walk him out. I tripped on the edge of the rug. "Careful." A force caught me around the waist and pulled me back.

I said, careful, watching his face for any sign of what lay underneath the pleasantry. "Remembering things," Dave said. It wasn't quite a question. My whole body went still, my pulse ticking up despite every effort to keep my face neutral. "Small fragments. Nothing significant." "Mm," Dave said, and took a slow sip from his own glass, unbothered, patient in a way that felt worse than if he'd pushed. "Fragments have a way of adding up, though, don't they. One detail here. One detail there. Before long a man remembers more than he lets on."

He slowly sank to his knees, wrapping his arms around his head, his knuckles turning white. "I... can't remember." He snapped his head up, panic flashing in his eyes for the very first time. His voice was as rough as sandpaper grinding against stone: "That day, I was handling border disputes in the council hall. A dozen guards can vouch for me. During the midday meal, I was with the Elders..." He stopped abruptly. A fracture suddenly flashed in the corner of his mind, a gaping void. No matter how hard he tried to recall anything after noon that day, it was as if a thick fog had sealed his memories, leaving him completely blind.

More of those doors with names. Forgotten, Birthdays, Human, Reaver, Unforgettable, Favorites, Men, Women, Katrina…. Wait, Human? “Titan, What are these doors?” I asked. He stopped for a moment. “Oh those? Those are your memories. Just storage rooms that house the memories. It’s pretty neat, nice and locked away tight. No one is allowed in there except me and you.” Titan said. “My memories? Wait... Why does that one say Human? I was never Human…” I said to my Wolf. “And this one says Forgotten? Are those memories I have forgotten? How did I forget them, if they are right here?” I asked.

“Completely.” Silence. “Both memory chains are intact.” Elena's face tightened. “That shouldn't happen.” Naomi nodded. “We know.” Ama stared toward the horizon. Trying to process what she had heard. A man who remembered dying. And remembered continuing to live afterward. Not confusion. Not delusion. Both. At the same time. Arthur looked like he wanted to sit down. “This is worse than continuity failure.” Gabriel sighed. “There's a worse version?” Arthur laughed weakly.

“Everyone needs to stay where they are.” My stomach drops. The man appears everywhere at once. Tall. Clean. Wearing nothing that marks him as important. That is the point. “I know this is frightening,” he continues. “What you are experiencing is an error. A temporary one.” People shout at their screens. Some throw things. Others listen. Kael’s jaw tightens. “Who is that?” “He is not supposed to be able to speak,” I say. The man smiles, patient and reassuring. “You are seeing things out of context. Memories without structure cause harm. We are working to restore order.”
