We had done it together.
Michael looked at the bridge too. Then he looked back at me, and a transformation crossed his face that I was not prepared for. This transformation was far from the controlled, calibrated expression he maintained in every room I had ever shared with him. This was far from all that, a feeling that did not have a strategy attached to it.
He smiled.
But this time, his smile wasn't the smile I knew from the mansion, which meant he had won something. His smile this time was different. It was smaller and almost private. The smile of someone who had just experienced an unexpected incident and had not yet decided what to do with it.
