My mind flashed back to Spring River, the little ones dragged from their hiding place, their eyes wide and terrified. I’d convinced myself they weren’t human, that they were wolves, enemies, threats. But the way these two girls looked at me, the way they trembled, made me realize something I hadn’t wanted to face. To them, we were the monsters. My voice cracked when I spoke. “I won’t hurt you. The very weakness of people. For a moment, she forgot everything. The world, the village, the Reapers, and her mother. Then it all suddenly came back to her like a ball of fire, hitting her hard in the chest. Her eyes started to blurr again and tears rose up to the surface. Her mother was now gone. The only person left in this world that loved her. She's all alone now in this cruel world, a world that is full of monsters. There's different kind of monsters that stepped in this land; there's the Reapers and there's the people. People are monsters too. People became monsters when they let themselves ruled by their negative emotions and selfish desires.

I said with a shudder. "I will let you, but it's not my fault if your burns will ache after." Felix chuckled. He made me raise my eyebrows with that excuse, but I realized he was right. For a few minutes, there was silence between us. There felt peace deep inside my heart after hearing he didn't hate me and Felix didn't hate me. In that short pause, Felix broke the silence, "Are we good now?" "I-I guess so," I answered, still a bit unsure. However, I knew that answer was enough to end the misunderstandings, and soon those disappointments would pass.

“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

Her face was pale, lips quivering. And suddenly, I remembered the first message carved into my arm. It hadn't said a monster; it had said monsters. Plural. If that was true… then we might be dealing with more than one creature. Even so, something about this didn't sit right. A subtle wrongness tugged at me… something I couldn't quite put into words.

But the thing about monsters was they followed you, even after the lights went out. And Rafael already knew, no matter how hard he tried to kill this thing between them, it wouldn’t stay buried.
