The enemy inside Later that night, Carlo stood alone in the surveillance room, surrounded by walls filled with monitors and flickering screens. Every angle of the compound was visible—every entrance, hallway, blind spot, and roof corner. The room was cold from the hum of the machines, but a thin layer of sweat clung to his neck. MAYA'S POV I take a deep breath and move my feet toward the staircase, my eyes darting around. I notice different areas of the academy blocked off with red ropes and the inscriptions reading NO ENTRY where monsters are at work in the damaged parts of the academy. “Wow, they’re rebuilding this place fast,” I say. Lux nods. “Yes. The academy has old money. They can run anything they want, as fast as they want.” We take the stairs up to the second floor. It's empty with no students in sight. Classes haven’t fully resumed yet, as I can spot some broken parts not yet to be rebuilt. I see buildings being repainted, nails and hammers already in place.

“Each one looks like they are fight scenes. With people and animals fighting… monsters. Good grief, how could I forget that? Those monsters. The little ones looked like smoke and tentacles. There were so many types of monsters and it got confusing seeing some attacking each other.
