He had no memory of the man’s face, only the legends Madison had whispered. If the "Great Alpha" of her stories made their mother so unhappy, then the stories were wrong. Madison moved closer to comfort me. I couldn't stay in the dark when her pups worked so hard to protect her. She pulled herself together, changed the subject, and tried to lighten the mood. A group of other pups from the Scarlett Vale pack arrived to play. I reminded them to stay within the scent-markers and let them go.

Their eyes locked, holding a steady gaze for seconds. “Do not cry, Puppy,” the man used his thumb to wipe away the tears trickling down Elena’s cheeks. “Save your tears for later,” he chuckled. “Please, I beg you,” Elena continued her plea, but her appeals seemed to fall on deaf ears. “Calm down Puppy, I have a surprise for you” The man smirked and cupped Elena’s cheeks.

“That’s not so bad. At least it’s nothing serious.” The doctor smiled. “However, the poor young pup will be feeling quite rotten the next few days. She’ll need lots of tending too.” Lionel nodded. “I’ll take a few days off. Keep a close eye.” “That’s just as well. The pup told me she wanted her parents to look after her. It’s good for young pups to bond with their parents…makes the inner wolf grow strong.” Katya winced. The idea of playing nurse maid to a sniveling pup was deeply unappealing. She could not bring herself to pass up on such a golden opportunity to insert herself further into the family.

And the last two were pitch black, like shadows with paws. “Oh my heavens, they’re so cute!” I squealed, giddy as a child. Caden laughed. Thalia and Erato, their twin puppies, ran circles around the family, sometimes herding the kids and sometimes joining in the chaos.
