This one’s been causing too much trouble.” Gretonia chuckled. “There are rumors of special blood in these woods lately. Powerful lines. We capture him alive if possible. Could be valuable.” My stomach twisted with instinctive disgust. The thought of Kaelen being caught, tortured, or killed made me feel physically ill. My hands started trembling. I gripped a nearby metal tool for support and accidentally crushed it in my palm without even trying. I stared at the bent metal, heart racing. How did I - What's this? What's happening?

I needed a whisper in the right ear to make Mistwood realize that Blackwater had friends they couldn't handle. I started walking down the central aisle. The mud was thick, sticking to the soles of my shoes. I saw a group of Northern warriors sitting on a pile of crates, drinking something from a wooden flagon that smelled like fermented honey and jet fuel. They watched me pass, their eyes tracking the way I moved. I felt like a prize poodle walking through a wolf den, even in these rags.

I almost puked knowing what they did. My fangs slid down before I even realized it, my mouth filling with the bitter taste of disgust. Marcus Blackwood. The mud seemed a bit discolored against the area outside the patch as if it had been dug out to bury something. Agenor saw that Maira and Falco had reached the origin of the rhythmic signal before them. Soon enough, Colt moved ahead and handed him the wooden cutout. Agenor gazed at the cutout as if he was looking at some kind of eviction notice from his own house. His eyes turned grim, his eyebrows unsettled, before turning back to normal.
