Mia navigates to a display of picture books and begins auditing them by cover with the rigor of a museum curator. Melody wanders into adult fiction. She runs her fingers along the spines the way she always has — slowly, not reading every title, just feeling for something. She pulls out a novel, looks at it’s cover, then puts it back. Pulls another, looks it over, and reads the back summary. Her grandmother’s kind of book — the sort of cover with a landscape, and a title that meant something besides what it said. She has seen this one on a shelf somewhere once. Maybe her grandmother’s shelf. Maybe it was a book her grandmother picked out, when she was younger. She becomes aware of a presence

That’s what saved you from ending up like those other poor guys. I just grinned and tapped my nose. Sitting alone at the kitchen table, I popped open a pack of ramen and flicked on the TV. "Today, our city was rocked by a spree of break-ins and murders, all targeting rich single men. The cops cracked the case wide open, rounding up a whole gang of suspects.” As I listened to the news anchor's report, I could not help but think there was some truth to the saying that after the storm is when the flowers bloomed.

The room was small with books taking up most of the spaces, leaving a very small space for people to sit. Red mask went to the seat behind the table and nodded for us to seat opposite him. Reluctantly, Craig pulled me to the seat beside him. Yet, I couldn’t help but stare at the strange pictures all over the room. There were like thousands of books that I was sure no one would be able to read to finish, no matter how many minutes they spent reading each day. “Where’s the mark?” he said without preamble. He seemed not to be interested in any other thing than the mark.

It looked very ancient as it was torn at some edges. “I picked this up during one of my research trips.” She said as she handed the book to Annabelle. “ It has some information on Luke but it doesn’t state his weakness. Although it did leave some clues. Difficult clues.” Annabelle opened the book. The words were written as if from a feather dipped in ink which signified the age of the book. Annabelle read it out:

“Who would put mint in a popcorn?” “I would,” Thomas intervened, shrugging. “Just to know what it tastes like.” “I’ll tell you what it tastes like: weird and not delicious.” “Shh! Shut up. The movie’s starting,” Leia shushed. Alice finally found peace when the movie started. It was a mystery where the detective was being played by a serial killer, leaving small clues in each of his victims. Alice liked mystery movies and comic books. It tickled her mind just like how science experiments did. It was a puzzle for her, a puzzle that was screaming and begging to be solved. However, she knew that it was different for murder cases. It was much more complicated.

"She used to read poetries to me. In her confession letter, she used one of the poems from her favourite book to describe how she viewed me. She even wrote my initials on the page." Poetries? Ahn Hana can’t help but think of the murder scene. Was that supposed to be poetic? "Did she like reading novels? Mystery or thrillers? Something related to murders? “ Usually, teenagers are interested in murder mysteries that offer them thrills. Reading poetry is rather normal, but Noh Kyung-hee doesn’t seem like a foolish and romantic girl to her.

I replied, shaking his hand briefly before pulling it back, a tingle left in its place. “So, Kalia, what’s so captivating in that book of yours that you almost missed the best coffee in town?” He nodded toward my cup. I tilted my head, considering him. “You are assuming I don’t already know that this place has the best coffee.” He raised an eyebrow. “Fair enough. But now I’m curious about the book.” I held it up, the cover facing him. “It’s a mystery novel. Keeps me on my toes.” He leaned in slightly, intrigued. “A mystery, huh? So, you like solving puzzles?”

"You found the library." Zade's voice. Of course. "Yes," I said, still not looking up. "I found it." "Finding everything you need?" "Yes." Silence. I could feel him standing there, watching me. Could feel the weight of his gaze. "What are you reading?" he asked. "A book." "I can see that. What book?" I finally looked up, holding up the cover so he could see. "Murder mystery. Detective thriller. Nothing interesting." His eyes scanned the cover, then moved to my face. "You like mysteries?"

I don't know if that's weird, I simply shrug it off and put on my clothes. Off to breakfast, eating alone in the big dining room is one of the boring conducts of the pack house. What boosts my energy are the books I read in the library, which might become the second place where I spend my time apart from my room. As I rummage the shelves to find some interesting book to occupy myself with, I hear the ruffling of papers in a closed door. Since I am not scared of mysteries, I go ahead to open the door and see what is going on.
