A quiet call he could not explain. He stopped near a small clearing where a stream ran over smooth stones. The water looked cold and clear. Leo knelt down and splashed his face. The chill woke him up but it also made his skin tingle in a strange way. He looked around. The trees seemed thicker here. The air felt heavier like it carried secrets. He had heard stories about this part of the forest. Old tales from the village people said that on full moon nights beasts walked between the trees. Men who went in never came back the same. Leo did not believe those stories but still his heart beat a little faster.

Shayla resisted longer, peppering me with last-minute questions about whether clouds slept and if frogs had birthdays. Lucas waited until the others were settled before speaking quietly. “Can you tell a story?” Something in his tone—hopeful, vulnerable—unlocked a memory deep inside me. “My mother used to tell me stories,” I said softly. “Would you like one of those?” Three heads nodded eagerly. So I began. I told them about the moon that fell in love with the sea but could never touch it, about the brave girl who taught the stars how to sing, about the fox who tricked winter into leaving early.

We paddled back still laughing. That night the bonfire was smaller than usual. Most of the others had gone into town for supplies, leaving only me, Liam, and Noah behind at the house. The fire crackled softly in the darkness, sending sparks twisting into the night sky. The air smelled like smoke and pine trees, and somewhere down by the water frogs croaked lazily in the reeds. We sat around the fire for hours talking about nothing important. Noah told terrible stories. Liam made fun of him relentlessly. I laughed so hard at one point my stomach hurt.

A subdued silence enveloped the fireplace after Shango’s story, interrupted only by the occasional chirping of the night crickets. “That does not count as a bedtime story,’’ Babybaby finally found her voice. “It is child,’’ the thunder god answered. “No it’s not’’ Babybaby insisted quite stubbornly. “bedtime stories are supposed to be a nice tales with happy ending, all bedtime fairytales are, like the ones Amaka used to read to me, this one is a stupid story.’’
