Hesitantly, I called out Madison's name. However, that long neck and strange head showed no reaction whatsoever. I shifted my gaze to Evan, who was beside Madison. A wet patch had spread beneath him, and he had already fainted from the shock. The eerie silence stretched on for what felt like an eternity before someone nervously spoke up.

So familiar. I just nodded and let out a quiet "Mm." Didn't stop him. Just opened the door and stepped out like I'd rehearsed it. Michael didn't hesitate either—hit the gas and vanished. I waited outside the County Clerk's Office the whole day, like I was waiting for some kind of answer. And weirdly? I felt calm. Like my phone—dead silent. Not a single buzz. Even when the office closed, he never came back. No call. No text. Nothing.

Her young master never even realized. Daniel didn’t know what he was feeling when he heard what Alice said. He subconsciously raised his head to look at Michelle who was watching TV on the couch. Without realizing he thought back to how Emile would always wait for him to come back before having dinner no matter how late he was.

I just wanted him to understand what I could see: sometimes problems just do not have as easy of solution as you think. One thing I noticed at dinner was that my dad was a little quieter than usual. I noticed this fact, but I was so engrossed in internal dialogues with Liam that I did not pay that much attention to him. I left to analyze this later. I raised my hand before thinking twice about it and touched him. Immediately my hand touched the scar on his chest, I started crying hysterically again. I could not put myself together anymore.

No notifications trying to pull me back into anyone else’s orbit. Relief hit first, warm and immediate. Good. No expectations. No one waiting for me to respond. No silent disappointment disguised as Just checking in. Then, because my brain enjoys chaos, disappointment followed. It wasn’t sharp or dramatic. Just a small, annoying flicker. The kind that made me roll my eyes at myself. What exactly were you hoping for? I didn’t know. I never did. I sighed and shoved the phone back into my pocket, already exhausted by the mental gymnastics required to interpret my own emotions.

Everything is efficient, clean and controlled. Exactly how I like it. My gaze drifts briefly across the table, and that's when I notice an empty chair. My pen taps once against the table, and the sound is soft. But in this room? It might as well be a gunshot. Everything slows, voices fade, eyes shift, and attention returns to me instantly.
