“I don’t understand your confusion–” “I’m not confused. I just don’t–” her expression twists, her eyes growing darker than before, if that’s even possible. “I just want us to be safe, that’s all.” “What can I do to make you believe that you are?” I hold her gaze, my chest going impossibly tight. Sarah’s brow pinches as she looks down at her son. The baby is nearly bald save for a light dusting of dark brown hair on the top of his head. I haven’t seen him with his eyes open yet, not that it matters. They’d still be the inky-dark, colorless spheres most newborns have.

Now I see why she did. She opens both eyes but refrains from looking at me. Her eyes, both swollen and purple, are focused on the ceiling, and although the swelling has significantly reduced, you can just tell that the left eye was swollen shut just hours ago. It’s also bloodshot red compared to the right one.

The world snapped into a new center. Everything else—blood, pain, exhaustion, the distant murmur of the pack outside—receded. There was only this. A baby. My baby. Our baby. They were heavier than I’d expected and yet impossibly fragile. Their hair was dark, and damp curls plastered to a soft skull. Their skin was flushed, mottled, hands still clenched into furious little fists. Their eyes blinked open, unfocused, pupil swallowing most of the iris. For a second, they looked utterly human.

“Pain. Anger. Grief.” My fingers tightened slightly around the baby. “And some of them are scared of me.” Jacob immediately shook his head. “They’re scared of what happened tonight. That’s different.” “No,” I replied softly. “I can feel the difference.” The baby shifted slightly in my arms. Instantly, both Jacob and I looked down at her. Her eyes slowly opened again. Silver. Bright. Aware. No newborn should have looked at people that way. I hated how used to it I was becoming already.

Newborns usually struggle to focus but she doesn’t. Then there's the issue of her eyes. She has unusual eyes. They're golden, bright, and intelligent when she looks away from me. As I watch her it's like she's tracking something I can’t see. For a moment I think she's looking at me or the canopy of leaves above me, but i can tell she isn't. She's looking at something else.

Her complexion was rose-pink and alabaster, and her little fists curled tightly as she wailed again. But it was her eyes that shocked me—violet, shining like amethysts in sunlight. "She's beautiful," I breathed, barely able to speak. Aaron looked at me, his expression torn between pride and terror. "Is she normal?" he asked curiously. The doctor cleared her throat, taking a step forward.

That way I can at least make sure she is safe. I sigh and slip out of the bedroom. It is time to go see my girls. I can hear Blair and Rosie calling through the house. “Upstairs girls!” I yell back. “Come to the nursery.” I go on to the nursery and see Caterina looking at the baby laying in Sunnys arm. Walking over I see her eyes open. Shock washes through me when I see them. Her eyes are blood red. And they are glowing.

He looks at me up and down whilst his goons are taking notes to put into my file. “This isn’t anything to worry about,” the doctor explains. Me and my Mum just look at him. Of course it’s something to worry about! “Excuse me? You’re telling me that my son bleeding from his eyes is nothing to worry about?” my Mum screams. “It’s not everyday someone bleeds from their bloody eyes!” she continues.

Lindsay pulled Grace so that she would turn around and look at her. Grace complied. Lindsay stroked her cheek tenderly. "We'll do our best for you and your baby. There's no way we would do anything to harm you. You know, we're the happiest people waiting for Kairos. If something does go wrong and the baby is switched, we will make every effort to find Kairos again." Lindsay said with great tenderness. "Regarding the different color of the eyeballs, it usually happens. A baby's eyeball color will always change as it grows. Let's wait until tomorrow to see if the color changes again. I can understand if this is quite a shock for new moms." The doctor explained.

On that same day, I promised myself not to leave his side, When I stared at his face longer this time, I realized he was actually born with dark red eyes, just like that of his father. Moments later he was taken away from me by the doctor, saying he needed to be washed. I nodded and let him take my baby while I rest on the bed, still partly exhausted. My legs felt weak. At the moment I can hear the sound of running water and my baby crying echo through the bathroom as the doctor quickly cleans him up. Sighing, I struggle to get up and sit down on the bed. The doctor brought him in and he was still crying. He was now clean and neatly wrapped with a new brown baby blanket. He must be hungry.
