On my seventh day in Snowcall, one of my friends, Lucas Freeman, called me out of the blue. "Miranda, when are you coming back?" "I'm not planning to anytime soon," I replied. "Norton's birthday is next week. You're not going to come celebrate?" "I'll pass, but I'll send something." The conversation went quiet, and I could hear Lucas awkwardly passing the phone to someone else. "Maybe you should try talking to Miranda. She usually listens to you," he said.

The invitation arrives via email. It's from Lisette. The subject line says: "Book Club - You Should Come." And the message is typical Lisette. Direct. No preamble. Just: "I started a book club. First month we're reading your book. You should come read to us." I call her immediately. "You started a book club and didn't tell me?" I ask. "I'm telling you now. It's six women. We meet once a month. This month we're reading your book because it's important and it's brilliant and I want to talk about it with people who will actually understand why it matters."

It had been the longest day at work, to finish off the longest week. I was so glad it was the last Friday of the month, this meant only one thing, my online book club was getting together to gossip about their latest read, all of us would have a glass of wine or two as we swapped ideas on our most recent book. I had a feeling tonight would be a good session as they had picked an erotic novel this time.

Clara's POV Priya Datta's book was published. She told me the title on the phone two days before it came out: In Her Name: The Architecture of Continuity. "What is it about?" I said, though I suspected I knew. "About what happens when something built with love survives the person who built it," she said. "About how meaning travels forward through structures both physical and institutional." A pause. "About the Eleanor Moore Foundation. About Eleanor and Edmund and Mara. About three children who were not supposed to exist. About a nurse named June who witnessed something and kept the story alive."

Lucy said. "A president is never late," Jane said. "You're just early." Indeed, Loser Club was no more. The former president had changed it to Helper Club instead, and Jane was its new president. For the last two years with Emily and Lucy, they had been helping students with math, English and science. The club was also a book club—the first official one that was supported by their school. Lucy giggled. "Where is Emily?" "She's coming with Heather soon." Emily had been obsessed with Heather for more than two weeks now, but Jane tried not to jump into conclusion. Emily might be on to another woman crush by next week, who knows?
