I met him 10 years ago. He had a fight with Susan and went to a bar to drink, while I was kidnapped by a group of delinquent girls and taken there. They forced me to perform a strip dance. I struggled, but it was useless. Desperate, I would rather die than be humiliated. I slammed myself against the bar's wall. Shawn saved me. From that moment on, he was my world. On the day he proposed, I drank for the first time in my life, despite being allergic to alcohol.

I didn't care. I lifted the bottle to my lips and gulped it down, gasping for air as I finished. My throat felt raw, but my heart was worse. It wasn't a hammered bird anymore; it was a hollow, aching void. “I lost him… I don’t know how, but I lost him forever,” I sobbed, the tears finally breaking through. “And without him, I am lost. I am so fucking lost, Jack. I don't know who I am anymore. Nana is gone… Cale is gone… there’s nothing left of the girl I used to be.”

Looked up. Didn't recognize the girl in the mirror. Hair? Wrecked. Skin? Dull. Eyes? Puffy and red. I didn't look like this this morning. Guess you really can lose yourself for love. I'd loved Jacob for years. With the wedding coming up, I thought we'd finally made it. Didn't see it was already falling apart. I took a deep breath, tried to shut down the spiral, and grabbed my phone. [Short one groom for this wedding. Anyone want the job?]

I did not reply. With one arm holding my daughter and the other pulling my suitcase, I walked toward her mother's house. No disappointment remained. No compromise either. Only relief. "Goodbye, Gwyneth," I muttered. This was the last time we would ever see each other. From this moment on, we would have nothing to do with each other. Congratulations on losing me. The next day, I boarded a plane. I knew that once I left, I would never return. At the same time…

" The assistant's lips moved. I heard nothing. Suspicious, I floated closer, and once again my vision went black. So infuriating! I flailed in anger. But when I opened my eyes again, I was back beside Dad!

I used to love meeting new people, love making new friends. But now, all of those things seemed like distant memories. Now, I was too scared to even leave my room. As I lay there, staring out the window, I felt tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. I felt like I was losing myself, like I was disappearing into the darkness of my own mind. I thought about all the things I had lost, all the things I had given up. I had lost my freedom, lost my confidence. I had lost myself. As the tears began to fall, I felt like I was mourning the loss of my old self. I was mourning the loss of the person I used to be, the person I used to want to be.

He opened his mouth, as if he wanted to stop it, but my applause drowned him out. Olivia froze for half a second, clearly thrown off by my calm reaction, then quickly recovered her sweet smile. She looped her arms around Nigel's neck and kissed him. For a brief moment, he hesitated. Then he kissed her back, and he didn't stop. The longer it lasted, the more he leaned into it. The cheers around us grew louder, but the sound felt distant, as if it couldn't reach me at all. I suddenly remembered a long-ago night when a girl had stolen a kiss from Nigel while he was drunk. I cried the entire night after finding out, my eyes swollen by morning.

They feel I'm losing my way, But how can I lose, What I never had? I'm the prodigal son, One that's never coming back home.
