"I'll lose my mind." Carlos reached for my hand and squeezed it gently. I was grateful for his warm fingers wrapped around mine. I was still shaken from the vision at the priestess's house, and his touch helped ground me in the real world. The orphanage sat on the outskirts of town, a large gray building with small windows and a heavy wooden door. It looked stern and unwelcoming, like the kind of place where children went to be forgotten. My stomach twisted as we approached. Somewhere in that building, my sister and I had lived as babies. We had been together once, before we were separated and sent to different families.

Right alongside the other word that had haunted me my entire life: Orphan. Perhaps this was why my parents had abandoned me in the first place. Perhaps I’d been defective since birth: not a wolf, not a daughter. Maybe, without the wolf abilities, they hadn’t seen anything in me worth loving, and had decided to simply dump me at the orphanage. What would that mean? That I didn’t belong with the humans and now, here, I didn’t belong either? What did that leave me with? Nothing. It left me with nothing.

I saw myself growing up in an orphanage home run by the Reverend Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary popularly called, IHM briefly.
