“Y-Yes boss.” Mario got off his hand, he rolled his eyes and smoked a cigarette for the second time. _________

I could still feel it under my skin—like a signature, like a promise, like the moment a match thinks about being struck and decides it wants to be fire. “Paper,” I said softly, the word leaving a temporary fog on the window. “Promises.” And because I refused, on principle, to be the first to look away, I stood and let the city look back until dawn found us both.

He said with his teeths in display as he took his remaining crayons leaving Mario with the other ones to carry himself. Mario chuckled, mouthing, ‘this boy’ to me making me chuckle. I watched Jayden and Mario walk towards the garden and that was when I opened the paper to see what Jayden had been working so hard on and my heart melted as I saw what Jayden drew and wrote out for me. On the top of the sheet, Jayden wrote my family portrait with a drawing indicating mom, Dad and me. I gasped covering my mouth and at the tiny part downwards he wrote,

I swerved my head in Mario’s direction, my eyes bulged with surprise. “He is at Veronica’s place,” Mario repeated, and I chuckled darkly, taking a glance at the designs again. I got up and walked to my drawer then dug out the card that contained the threat message sent to Rosy. I peered closely at the designs and then at the one on the drawing board. “What do you think about this, Mario?” I asked, throwing the card at him. He caught the card and stared at the designs, a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

"What do you want to talk about?" Mario took something from his work bag. After finding what he was looking for, he handed it over to Arthur. Without hesitation, the old man accepted what Mario gave him. "It's the result of Capital's decision," Mario said after handing the paper to Arthur. Arthur put on his reading glasses and carefully read what was written on the paper. "So, Alpha Beta was chosen this time?" His voice sounded displeased. Mario nodded again. "That's right, Opa. Alpha Beta got chosen. I think they deserve it."

It would be better for them to know that than to grieve in sadness when they knew I’m dead. “Mario, are you sure? Because if you’re certain I’ll take the paper in your hand, you won’t have the shit to write another letter to them, even if you kneel in front of me and cry like a baby.” What he said caught me off guard. Except for Noah, who likes me to kneel infront of him, I will not kneel to any guy just to have a request granted. “Yes. I don’t need a letter. Just input a name that the money came from, and I’m done.”

Reaching out to it, so I won't have to strain Ophelia in my arms, I could see it was a message from an unknown sender. My blood ran cold and my hands trembled, on seeing the content of the message. I replied. "So, I was just your test experiment?" What did he want me to say? Of course he was just a figment of my imagination at that moment. I wanted to reply him, but then I noticed a red smudge on the paper. "How did you get paint on my sketch?" "None of your business," he said, folding the paper and putting it back in his pocket. "It's not yours. It's mine now." "I thought you came to return it." "No. I came to ask why you're so close to Mario," he said, a thick edge in his voice.

When he heard the door open, he turned slightly and pulled a folded paper star from his pocket. Once, after we had an argument, we went three days without speaking. The next morning, a paper star appeared in my desk drawer. When I unfolded it, the word sorry was written inside. After that, the stars became his standard apology. Whenever he upset me, he folded one. Sometimes it said "Sorry." Sometimes "Got it." Once, it even said nothing but "Okay." I kept every star in a clear glass jar in the most noticeable spot on my desk. During the second half of freshman year, I joked with him.

"Now can I have it?" "Hold on. There's more on the back," he said. "Oh... wow..." It was quite a sketch of Luigi from Mario kart but made into a super sexy hunk. I turned red with embarrassment as he looked at it, holding in his laughter. "This is the sort of fantasy you have? Noted," he said as I snatched the paper from him and stuffed it into my bag.
