"What is an ending for?" Each member of the council stared at it. The blacksmith answered first. "So someone else can begin." The violinist whispered, "So the music can be remembered." The elderly woman smiled. "So travelers know where they have been." The young man spoke last. "So nothing is lost." The old man nodded thoughtfully. "All true." He looked at the blank page. "But incomplete." He picked up a quill resting beside the book. For the first time in centuries... He wrote. "An ending is not a wall."

The Sage knelt in the corner, chains pulled through his ribs. "Do not touch the pen," he whispered. Haley leaned in. "Why?" The original conclusion answered. "Because the pen writes endings." Katherine's eyes went to the page. AT THE END, JACK MILLER MUST DIE ALONE-- The conclusion placed the pen tip at the next word. Jack lunged. The conclusion was faster. It wrote. SO THAT THE FAMILY MAY LIVE. The sentence completed. The room exhaled. The page accepted it. Outside, somewhere far away, Marcus screamed.

And now, I was done believing him. The silence stretched on, and the man on the phone asked again. I steadied myself and answered calmly. "Yes. I accept." We exchanged a few more words, settled on a start date, and I hung up. Then I hailed a cab and went home. I pushed open the front door and went straight upstairs to pack. I was moving out. If I was going to end things, there was no point dragging it out. Packing did not take long. Looking down at the worn-out clothes and pants so faded they had turned white, it hit me just how lean these years had really been.

Next, some liquid splashed down, and her bones shattered, then slowly dissolved into a puddle of water.
