Paul smiled sadly over his cell phone as his son answered it and he stared longingly over the caller ID. Paul looked out through the window and whispered, "I should be the one beside her, not Stan. I should be the one she chose, so why can't it be me that time?" Paul smiled at himself as he heard Danny was sniffing loudly over the cell phone. Paul chuckled silently and whispered, "What am I thinking? She can't choose me because I was the one who let go of her, not Jane."

He reached for me, but I stepped back. “You promised you would stay with me.” “And you promised that if I pressed that number, you would always come.” He froze. “We both broke our promises.” Footsteps sounded outside before Mira pushed in with a fruit basket. She stopped when she saw me.

I turned to the other lady, or better yet, woman. Paula was at the vanity table, already cleaning up. She was older than Lithia, had big round goggles and straight black hair...but a nice sense of fashion. "Since I'm married..." Paula began and Lithia rolled her eyes. "They only need your ID, name..." "Picture?" I asked holding my breath. Paula took a second to answer. "Yeah, but it's optional." Oh, thank God. I heaved a sigh of relief. I had been thinking of how to forge that for a while now.

"There's still so much I want to do. My studies, research, projects, and papers… There are so many things far more important than trying to please a future mother-in-law or getting married and having kids. "I fought so hard to pull myself out of that swamp and made it to today, finally earning the right to choose my path. I don't want to, and I'm not willing to step right into another swamp."
