“I’m sure Dad will be thrilled to hear that part.” Asher laughed. “Maybe I should bring the whip to dinner.” Blair nodded, and turned as Theo yelled his name. “I’ll see you and mystery woman tonight.” Asher watched him leave, then he helped Rick round up the last horses from the corral and put them in their stalls. Blair wanted Black Moon to service Betty, but Asher wanted a foal first. Black Moon was – as his name described – pitch black, large, and as tame as a puppy, despite his fierce looks.

“Be calm.” To the amazed people around, the horse stopped its wild advancements and stopped. It then did a turn and slowly advanced to Blake and Xuanlu’s position, lowering its head as if it were a child being scolded. Blake looked at the majestic Black horse with a golden horn in the middle of its head. One could see that it was well-bred. A young youth came running, panting as he witnessed the horse standing there with Blake and Xuanlu with his head down, looking soroful. “Huang, how dare you try and escape from me!” The youth of eight in age called out, still trying to catch his breath.

She glanced at Cody and corrected saying “our barn.” Damon said, “Cody was telling me about heartbreaker.” Angel smiled so brightly at the mention of the horse she said “He is a randy fella for sure. But, beautiful, I’ve never seen a more beautiful animal.” Damon looked at Cody and said, “You know Gambler and Heartbreaker have the same Sire.” She heard Cody sigh, but he said “Yes, I knew. It’s the culmination of a man’s life’s dream to own a horse like that.”

River and Gerald walked back toward us. “My name is Gerald. Are you her husband?” Gerald asked and gestured to me. “Yes, I am. My name is River. I'll probably be the one working with those two the most,” River said. “Well, you calmed Blazer down pretty quickly. Blazer is my racing horse. He is still young, and I think he could still do great, but the fire really messed him up. The other one is Chief. Chief is my cutting horse,” Gerald said. “I’m rather impressed by how quickly you calmed him down.” Gerald’s voice held surprise and awe. “Blazer is the worst one. I’m sorry about that, Dallas.”

We arrived at a stable next and I gasped at the beauty of the horses, a particular brown Mare caught my attention. I reached out and stroked her fur, the horse neighed softly and relaxed in my hand. I smiled at the stable manager, he smiled back. “Does nobody ride these horses?” I asked the young boy who looked less than 20. “His Highness rides the horse from time to time. Shimer is his horse, the pure black breed at the extreme.” He pointed towards it. I nodded and turned and sure enough, a majestic black horse was at the extreme, it was in its own world nibbling on the carrots. It paid us no attention. I smiled, “Like owner, like horse.”

I asked, eyeing the fine creatures for something familiar, trying to inject a bit of lightness into the heavy mood, my words coming out quiet. He didn’t answer at first, his quietness ringing loud, his face shut down, making it clear he wasn’t up for chatting. I edged closer, taking in his tense jawline, and my chest felt heavy. “I’ll go with Brown Starlight,” he said at last, flashing a quick half-smile as he led out a sturdy chestnut stallion. “I’ll claim Thunder, the white one with the wild blaze,” Sarah chimed in, her tone upbeat and almost buoyant, as she approached a glossy mare, her bottled-up excitement spilling over the awkwardness.

----- RIEKA We exit the side door of the house and standing before us are two gorgeous horses! One is a beautiful black stallion, just like I imagine Black Beauty, from the book, would look. The second horse is a palomino. Its body has the perfect golden shimmer to contrast with the creamy white mane and tail. She is perfectly groomed and both horses are saddled up and ready to go. They are both extremely large, but the black stallion is the bigger of the two. I guess at least one of them would have to be massive in order to carry Aleksandr. I notice that the black horse has a couple saddle bags as well, but I can’t see what’s inside them.

Roxanne changed quickly, her eyes shining with excitement. "You look beautiful in anything, my fair princess," Jaxon complimented her as she stepped out. He took her to the stable, where twenty horses of different breeds awaited. There was Sugarplum, a beautiful chestnut mare with a white blaze on her forehead, Noir, a sleek black stallion with a star-shaped marking on his nose, a proud Arabian named Zephyr, a gentle giant of a Shire horse named Thunder, and several others, each with their unique markings and personalities.

I smiled apologetically at the guy and grabbed Azrael’s hand, yanking him through the lobby to the sliding glass doors. “There’s something I need your help with.” He cocked his head, but no longer resisted as I tugged him around the building and down the alleyway. I stopped just a few feet away from the horses, not knowing how they’d react to him. Their ears remained upright, which I felt like might’ve been a good sign, and the fire that was their manes didn’t so much as flicker. Did that mean they were okay with him? Azrael’s eyes widened, and he blinked. “Blakely, where did you get those horses?”
