Hannah was a clean we picked up about a month ago on a long mission that had ended in disaster, huge fucking epic disaster. The mission had started out like any other and progressed the way we all expected it to, until we found Hannah and her brother Danny klein. Then things had turned to shit fast. From overheard conversations and our own observations we had figured there was an imminent attack on the compound and high tailed it back. We made it in time but the infected still managed to get around our defenses, attacking from below and striking at the heart of our community. A lot of lives had been lost that day, including Wheeler.

“And acting skittish about it?” Letting out an irritated grunt, she explains. “Let's just say years ago the council grew scared the book could mistakenly get out to humans if discovered, so it was banned from society and burnt to ashes. Or at least, the copy of the book was burnt. A long time ago-” She hesitates, staring at me for a brief second, before continuing. “An ancestor of mine wrote this book and no one has any idea I have the only original with me. If anyone finds out I have this in my possession my entire family would be punished and I can’t let that happen, they’re already facing enough being defects.”

About a garden, about a fig tree, about the dogs buried under its branches and the women who loved them. Beatriz's successor, Eva, was hesitant at first. "A children's book?" she said. People gathered around the central table. Waiting. Watching. Hoping. Bea hated being the one who had to speak first. She rubbed her hands over her face.

I'll call you when we're done. Other students began to fill the auditorium, making the place although slowly, noisier and hotter in temperature. A fat student that had the shape of an hard-boiled egg sat in the seat next to him minutes before they commenced. Behind his sat a girl with eyeglasses so thick he suspected they were bulletproof. She had an awfully small nose that reminded him of rats. In the seat before him was another girl that looked so thin it reminded him of someone with a terminal disease.
