My phone vibrates inside my jacket. I leave it there. Marco’s phone buzzes right after. He checks it, his jaw tightening. “And so it starts,” he mutters. “What?” He turns the screen toward me. I go to take a shower and when I'm done, I find a text from Xander saying he'll be at the frat in twenty minutes. Sending out a reply, I go to Kim's contact. My finger hovers over the call button but I change my mind at the last minute. Placing down the phone, I head over to the closet and pull out a pair of dark faded jeans and a dark grey t-shirt. * * * * I flip my cap backwards and widen my legs on my sitting position on the sofa, tipping back the shot of bourbon down my throat. I whimper as I shut my eyes, trying to take my head far before he stops me by placing his free hand under my chin. The pain of his touch electrifies my whole cells. I imagine death, the ruthless phantom that feeds on lives, especially innocent ones. I checked and realised that he had really opened my messages app, found his number, and deleted it from my phone. En fait, he had deleted the whole thread before he had handed me the phone. “Leave us.” She hesitated just a fraction. He didn’t look at her when he repeated it. “Now.” She bowed and exited swiftly. The door closed behind her with a final, echoing click. We were alone…again. My chest felt tight, compressed. Xander stepped closer until his shadow fell over me completely. He crouched slightly, bringing himself level with my seated height, the letter still in his hand. “I’m going to read this,” he said calmly. “But not yet.”
