POV: Rose He came at dawn. Not to the Council building. Not to the inn, the restaurant, or any of the places that had become ours. He came to the roof. I did not know how he knew about the roof. Perhaps he had always known. Twenty years of surveillance had produced detailed maps of the people he managed, and I had been on that map before I even knew I existed inside it. The roof was simply where I went. He knew where I went.

The maître d’ greeted us with practiced warmth and a bow so courtly, you’d think we were royalty. “Mr. and Mrs. Patterson. Right this way.” Brayden’s hand was on the small of my back as we made our way to the elevator and then up. The rooftop was like stepping into a whole new world – like an enchanted forest built by gold-loving fairies. The noise from the traffic below was barely audible from up here, all drowned out by soft ambient music. Fairy lights were intertwined with the vines and replaced the stars which were rendered invisible by the city’s smog.

His voice is entirely neutral but his eyes are entirely not, and I make the decision to hold both of those things gently and not press. Horizontal escapes. I pushed up the final ladder to the roof. The metal groaned louder this time. One of the men below looked up. Our eyes almost met. I rolled over the edge just in time. Footsteps below. “They’re up top.” Plural. They didn’t know how many. Good. The rooftop was flat, gravel-covered, HVAC units humming softly. The city stretched out in low orange light beyond it. Another roof sat three feet away. Jumpable. But noisy. Below, one of the men started climbing.

Ian smirked and replied, "For me, everything is open." He brought her to the rooftop and uttered, "Now look." Ava stepped onto the roof and turned her head to see what he was talking about. But she let out a loud gasp. "T-This!" "This is only for my nerd," Ian replied, releasing her hand. Ava could not believe her eyes. Ian had made the rooftop into a beautifully decorated place. She could see dim yellow lights in the trees. In the center of the roof, there was a round table that was white in color, and there were two chairs that were also white.

I answer and follow her but as I stand in front of that whole rooftop, I couldn’t stop being amazed. What the hell is this place? It is absolutely mesmerizing. It is painted all white, unlike other rooftops. The huge pillars are decorated and designed intricately and colored in white. There is a beautiful swing in the middle of some beautiful white couches. There are few numbers of cushions in the swing resting happily. Does she own this place or what? I look around and see beautiful hydrangeas of blue, pink, and green colors and peonies of varying colors decorating the whole place.
