The forest drank the light. June pushed through veils of thorn and creeper, her booted feet sinking into the soft, rotting loam. The air was thick and cold, carrying the scent of wet earth and something else, something ancient and metallic. The stories called this place the Cursed Wood, a place where hunters did not return. June clutched the haft of her throwing axe, her knuckles white. She was not here for game. She was here for the beast, the shadow that was said to tear livestock and men apart with equal indifference.

Before I could spiral further, a memory surfaced sharply, cutting through the unease. Earlier before I pretended to be sick, before the hospital farce reports had reached me. One of the rival packs, the Ash Hollow pack, was thriving a little too comfortably. Their stories were fuller than mine. Their hunters returned with excess meat while some of my own complained quietly of rationing. That alone was an insult. No pack in the werewolf kingdom was allowed to appear weaker than my pack. My lips curled slowly. I had pushed that thought aside because of the seer, because of the elders breathing down my neck. But now? Now it returned with fire.

Juliette had heard these horror stories from the previous receptionist. As she got closer to the door, she heard a thud as if he had thrown his shoe at the wall. He threw things, but most often his shoes, she’d learned. She bit her lip at the thought that at least it wasn’t an employee’s head. In the brief silence that followed the thud, she slowly opened the door to his office. He was still on the phone and beckoned her to enter.
