I stand up and look around the campsite before turning back to face Fleur. “Where’s Drew?” I ask and she looks at Seb before looking at me nervously. “He uhm, had to go get something from the village.” She gulps, clearly uncomfortable and nervous which only made me more curious.

"Is that a deer?" asked Amos, widening his eyes to see a deer with long antlers among the trees. He remembered seeing the animal in the book Balferis had read. "Have you ever seen one? There are a lot in this area," Sera replied. She got tired of seeing them. Several times, she ate them. "Beautiful," Amos murmured as he saw a group of deer. He didn't expect to see those animals for real. He loved it every time Balferis showed him pictures of the animals. He liked their cute widened eyes and pointed horns.

I said, turning. Drake stopped a foot away from me. “That was some impressive hunting earlier. I’ve never seen a Luna take down a deer like that. So quick and clean.” He gestured to the fire, where today’s kill was being carved up to serve. It felt both beautiful and barbaric at the same time, to feast on something that I had hunted myself. But it felt so, so right—so in tune with the primal beast that lived inside of all of us. I felt my cheeks warm at the praise. The cooks had even commented on how tender the meat was, indicating that the deer had not suffered—sometimes, the overwhelming suffering of an animal could tinge the meat with a strange taste. But not today.

I glanced back to the massive lake and marveled momentarily at the mountains in the distance. They were huge, so tall I couldn’t make out the top through the thick cloud bank. I briefly wondered if most mountains were this tall, or if the entire scene before me was some concocted illusion. I forced myself to remain patient and answered the Game Master. “The deer drank from the lake, and they changed. From first glance, I’d say the deer took some of the magic from the lake.”

It is the time when they are really in the mood.”
