The scout, a young man with a desperation-filled gaze, attempted to get away, but Lyla and Damon stopped him fast. Kyra stepped forward, her expression unwavering and icy. "Who sent you?" she questioned in a threatening, low voice. The scout made an effort to fight his captors, but it was obvious that he was inferior. He spit out, "Xander will destroy you all," his voice full of defiance. "You can't stop him." Kyra squinted her eyes. "We will investigate that. Tell me, what plans does he have?"

Pyro grunted, jumping straight to the issue at hand after the brief introduction. Layla, Zayne, Sylvan, Eleanor, Felix, and him were in Felix’s office. Everyone apart from Zayne was seated, who was standing in front of Pyro, who had decided that he would personally profile him instead of Felix. His fiery eyes gauged Zayne, but the werewolf didn’t flinch. “Yes, where do I sign up?” Zayne replied, gauging him back with the same intensity. “This isn’t an after-school club you just sign up for.” Pyro scoffed, crossing his legs and leaning into his chair. “How do we know you aren’t going to betray us to the parliamentarians?”

The Black Soul Scout had stopped fleeing and now stood defiantly on an abandoned stretch of farmland, surrounded surprisingly by four others. "So this is why you stalled me—to buy time and gain confidence to face me directly?" Felix asked, genuinely puzzled. Did this scout really think he could not escape, or was he actually planning a desperate final stand? The four people standing with him were only middle-stage Transcendents, and Felix knew he could crush them all with a single blow. The Hall of Souls surely understood how powerful he had become. Meanwhile, the scout's eyes filled with madness and hatred as he glared at Felix. "Felix, this is where you'll die. Prepare yourself!"

My hands tremble as I type in Scar's number. "This is Zoya," I say the moment he answers on the second ring. "Oh my goodness, Zoya. Tell me you're safe." "Yeah, I am. I'm okay." I keep my voice from trembling as I nod, looking around the dark woods. I just fought a bunch of rogues for goodness knows why, Xander just confirmed that he wants nothing to do with me, but of course I was okay. There was no other way to be. At least I have Scar. I still have him.

The air was crisp, the kind that prickled at the skin and heightened every sense. Ryder walked close beside me, his steps nearly soundless. “Do you think it’s the rogues?” he asked under his breath. “Could be,” I replied, my voice low. “Or it could be something worse.” “Worse?” I glanced at him. “Supernatural creatures don’t always play by our rules. We prepare for the worst.” As we approached the scouts’ position, one of them stepped forward to greet us. “Alpha,” he whispered, bowing his head. “The tracks are just ahead. You’ll want to see this.”

Yet, I was so wrong. When I saw Jackal that day, I saw something in him that made me back out and depart the room. A ray of light, though not a dazzling one, united Scarlet and Jerk. Looking into my clairvoyance, I realised I had underestimated my enemy. Not only was he linked to Scarlet, possibly someone she had known when young, he was also not an ordinary human.

“Kyla is my lover, and the two are mates. It’s… complicated, but I’d be very thankful.” The scout’s eyebrows shoot up as she hears Dereck. She then considers me and Kyla once more before shaking her head in disbelief and then replies, “then I’ll request enough for everyone. I never thought two leaders like them could be mates, but you were one to befriend the oddest of people all the time, so I’m not surprised.” At last, the scout stops just outside a pair of large doors. She gives it a knock and then, with a loud voice, she says, “the leaders and Dereck are here now.”
