The velvet curtains in my chamber were drawn against the dawn, as they had been for two centuries.
I rose from rest without need of sun, without want of light. The gilded mirror showed me what it always showed - raven hair, eyes the color of old blood, the face of a predator who had forgotten what prey felt like.
"Another obligation," I said to my reflection. "Another theater of sycophants."
The cufflinks at my wrists were shaped like stylized ravens, custom-made in an age when craftsmen still feared their patrons. I fastened them without looking, the motion automatic, meaningless.
