“You will awaken when the time is right. And when you do, you must choose.” The words echoed in Eve’s mind, and just as suddenly, she was back. The battlefield came rushing into focus. The power inside her surged again, no longer chaotic but controlled. She raised a hand, and golden energy erupted from her palm, forming into a shape—a sigil, ancient and powerful. The creatures recoiled, hissing in fear. Eve’s eyes snapped to Selara, and for the first time, she saw something in the red-eyed woman’s gaze. Uncertainty.

Working with practiced movements, she began mixing ingredients, muttering under her breath. The ritual preparation took nearly an hour. Yrsa drew an intricate pattern on the ground, first with ash, then with a viscous red substance I knew wasn't just animal blood. She worked methodically, her hands steady despite her hatred. The pattern spiraled outward from a central point, ancient symbols forming a complex lattice of power. When she finished, she turned to Hilda. "Stand here," she instructed in broken English, pointing to the center of the pattern. "Let blood soak earth. Sigils activate."

I hear Star giggle at my inner rant. ‘It's our power manifesting. Would you chill and let me work. Anyone would think you haven't seen a Moon Goddess’s power manifest before’ she says, and I see her roll her eyes from the back of my mind. He pads away and although I can still feel her stirring within me, I cannot connect to her. I lay down in this blinding white light and close my eyes. Hopefully I can sleep through whatever mumbo-jumbo my wolf is up to.

The Rite of the Red I stepped onto the iron platform. The heat from the magma below was intense, but it was nothing compared to the fire inside me. Fenris took his place opposite me, his broadsword driven into a slot in the floor. "Ready?" he asked. "Do it," I whispered. Marcus and the Resistance engineers hit the switches. The four pillars began to spin, the ancient symbols glowing with a blinding blue light. A hum started—a sound so deep it vibrated in my teeth—and then, a beam of energy shot from the pillars, meeting in the center of my chest.

I tucked the journal under my arm and made my way to the clearing. Sera was already there when I arrived. She stood in the center, the moonlight making her skin glow. Her eyes were closed, and I could see silver light flickering across her hands. She was practicing the connection technique I had taught her, drawing power from the moon without consciously thinking about it. She had grown stronger in just a few days. The progress was remarkable. Or frightening, depending on how you looked at it. "You're early," I said. Her eyes opened. The silver faded and left them brown again. "I was practicing. “It’s feeding off the magic. Stabilizing it. Making a choice.” Light flared across the ceiling above us before skittering down the wall, a new sigil being etched into the stone beneath my fingertips. I knew some of them. Shaping wards. Nesting glyphs. Containment spells. But mixed in were others I didn’t recognize. Variation sigils. Ones I had never witnessed cast. Only fantasized about in dreams. “Can you turn it off?” I asked. Draven shook his head with a slow cadence. “Why would I?”

“You did good. You did so good.” He stirred faintly, lashes trembling. “Did we win?” She looked at Zevran. His eyes were on the horizon, where the smoke was rising again. “Not yet,” he said. “But we’ve bought a breath.” Kaelira followed his gaze—and froze. Carved into the distance, glowing with the heart’s light, stood an enormous sigil—the same three crescents now blazing across the land itself. It pulsed once. Twice. Then the plains began to move.

She leaned down, licked the wound slowly, her tongue trailing over the spot where she had bitten. The skin glowed. A tattoo bloomed into existence across Aria’s chest — a crest carved in divine sigil, blooming like ink in water: A serpent curling around a golden apple, its tail piercing a crown, its fangs dripping onto a rose wrapped in thorns. Eris’s mark. “I’m yours now,” Eris said, voice hoarse, hands framing Aria’s face. “Forever.” Aria’s body moved on instinct. She reached up, pulled Eris down, and kissed her hard.

“Blood-bound. Wolves twisted by Elias’s ritual. They’ll keep coming until one of us is dead.” Rowan’s jaw clenched. “Great.” Caleb backed toward a fallen pillar, clutching his satchel. “The sigils… if we can re-ignite them—” “Do it,” Silas said. “Mara, keep them off him.” The first thrall burst out of the mist like a nightmare made flesh — a man-shaped body with a wolf’s skull stretching its face, skin cracked and blackened around the joints. Its claws hit the flagstones with a sound like glass breaking.
