“There’s only what’s left after the choosing.”
The water hissed, swirling tighter around me, higher now to my waist, to my ribs.
Each breath I took tasted of iron.
The runes I had carved into the cliffs glowed through the mist, feeding the surge.
I lifted my hands, and the waves obeyed.
From the center of the sea, a column of water rose, twisting like smoke, its surface flickering with faces wolves, warriors, ghosts of all the drowned who had ever followed me.
They whispered in a thousand voices, all mine, all hers.
