he said, leaning back on his hands, “you got a boyfriend at college or what?” The question hit like a spark. I swallowed. “No. Nothing serious.” “Shame.” His gaze dropped to my chest, then lower, lingering on the pillow I was clutching. “A guy like you? Bet they’re all over you.” I laughed nervously. “What about you? Still breaking hearts?” He shrugged, muscles shifting. “Had a couple hookups. Nothing that stuck. They were too… vanilla.” His eyes met mine again, darker now. “I like when someone can keep up with the teasing. The push and pull.”

If I didn't finish the chapters for it, I wouldn't have enough to eat next week, let alone pay Carl’s next subscription f*e. I opened the document for the book. I was supposed to be writing a scene where the hero saves the heroine from a burning building. It felt like a joke. How was I supposed to write about heroes when I couldn't even stand up to a third line bully? I typed a sentence, deleted it, and typed it again. My brain felt like it was stuck in molasses. “He reached out his hand, promising to protect her no matter the cost.” I closed the laptop. I couldn't do it. The stories I usually built to escape reality were now just mirrors of my own failure.

I looked away. "Kiss or Kill." I froze. "Savage Devotion." My throat tightened. "Sinner's Little Angel." My eyes widened slightly. Cathy lifted an eyebrow. "You wrote an entire series about masked men, killers, stalkers, obsession, dark romance..." She leaned closer. "And don't think I haven't noticed how every male lead somehow acts the same." My lips parted no words came out. Because she wasn't wrong. After that night, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

He looked sad or discouraged as he mentioned that. “I have had a few boyfriends in my short life they were all very short and sad experiences, which led me to read all the fantasy romance book I could get.” He looked pained. “The men you were with were short and sad?” He questioned me. I guess even though our language was the same the meanings didn’t always translate the same. I shook my head and smiled. “No. It means my experience with men was within a short time and they were all bad experiences, none of them were good examples of men.” I frowned rethinking about my crappy past times.

I'd made love to her, I'd loved her with my body, and every single day after that, I asked myself the same question. What was wrong with me? I mean, I certainly must have had a screw loose in my brain when I called Jay Ives and bought her those novels. I literally hated romance novels. They gave women unrealistic expectations of romance and relationships that men couldn't live up to. And I didn't get the whole point of drooling over overly endowed men and detailed sex scenes.

This was the first time someone that was Anthony’s fling was kind to me. The others who knew me always resented me for being his friend, so it was weird to see someone like her being this way. “And don’t worry. Anthony and I never fucked. We only kissed back then. Looking back now… ew, he was one ugly kid.” Angela shuddered. I could not stop myself from chuckling at her words and the expression that came with it. Angela seemed to be a chill person and maybe she was not so bad after all, only condescending.
