Namun lukisan itu ditengarai telah ditukar dengan lukisan palsu setelah lukisan yang sama muncul dalam koleksi seorang kolektor. Pada akhirnya kedua lukisan itu dinyatakan palsu oleh para ahli. Lantas dimanakah lukisan yang asli? Dan apakah yang sebenarnya terjadi? Benarkah lukisan itu ditukar? Atau dicuri? Atau mungkinkah lukisan asli itu memang tidak pernah ada?
