Metal screamed; bolts tore; the rail bent into a crooked grin over the abyss. “Ronan!” Mira’s voice, above and behind, ricocheted down the shaft. “Left! Its tendon—!” He didn’t need the warning. He felt the coil of it, the spring in the wrong leg. He let the lunge slide past, drove two claws into the joint, and ripped. The limb buckled; the thing teetered on three points of balance that had never belonged together.

Amon’s neck was dripping from the spot where Orion had dug his claws, barely missing his carotid artery—a feeling crept over me that Orion missing it had been intentional. Amon’s blood had splashed onto my face, dripping down my neck. The shrieks of the terrified audience snapped me back to reality.
