I began walking away again. “Stubborn, you mean.” Rudolph mumbled in reply. “Elena!” He shouted my name. “What, brother?!” “Go home straight, please.” “Sure, of course.”

Even though I’m wearing a facade of adultlike indifference, I can’t help but feel a sense of childlike excitement building up inside of me as we inch closer to Santa’s chair. The sand burns my soles when I cut across the beach to the bridge. Among the holidaymakers in their swimming trunks and bikinis, a man with a suit will attract attention. I dare glance over my shoulder again and spot Rudolph walking over the scorching hot sand with his jacket slung over his shoulder, appearing to have no worries in the world. He looks like one of those holiday commercials with the Italian guy strolling in a tux, trouser legs rolled up, on a beach in Sicily.

But they had no problem adopting the human way of life. The streets were filled with Christmas lights and decor. Every little house on the street had a unique quark. Mr. Humphrey, the local butcher, had hung a deer head on top of the large green sign that said "Humphrey's Butchery." The local grocery store had an inflated Santa who was surrounded by a group of five-year-olds who were playing ring around the rosy with the Santa in the middle. Even the street lights had been decorated with spirals of Christmas lights. It was as if Killian and I were in the middle of Sanata's workshop.

"You know how old I am! I'm three and a half!" "Has Santa ever not come?" he asked again. "No." "There is one thing you have to do," I said. "What?" "You must go to sleep." "It's the rule," Nox added with a wink. "No," she declared with all her daddy's finality. "Grandpa said I could stay up with him and watch for Rudolph. Santa needs his nose in the snow." Nox's shoulders straightened. "Grandpa said that, did he?" "Yep." Auburn curls bounced as Angi's little head bobbed.

“I thought he just went upstairs. Usually it takes him forever to change.” Holly frowned. Usually it did take her dad a long time to get into costume. He always took extra care attaching the beard for this so that the kids could tug on it and not have the secret ruined. The glue took a long time to dry. Yet, there was Santa at the front door. “Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!” boomed Santa, throwing open the front door to the bookstore. The kids all cheered and ran to gather around the jolly old man.

I'm talking about seeing the butterfly costume. "Look at this! This one is definitely on the list.” Oliver says seeing the Superman costume. “It has to be an elf! Imagine the elf baby at Christmas, there’s one for girls too, oh my God! Look at this!" I'm talking about seeing a baby dressed as Santa Claus. “At Christmas, either my dad or your dad will dress up as Santa Claus, I’ll decorate everything and the baby will feel like he’s at Santa’s house, I can’t fucking wait,” Oliver says excitedly.
