- I told him. He nodded and pulled several books out from one of the stacks and set them in front of me. I opened the top book and ran my fingers over the runes in the title. It was beautifully written as if each word was drawn with love and attention to detail. Now that I looked at it, it reminded me of a combination of Norse and Old English. Nerrian pulled his chair closer and pointed to the first word, speaking it in my mind than out loud in Draygonian. With his help, I repeated the word over and over again until I perfected it.

She felt a shift in the air and for a moment she felt fear for it was terrifying enough to think the whispering person --if it was, in fact, a person-- could be just before her. Ah. . .the rune. . Dea waited patiently --and anxiously-- for the person --thing-- to go on. The rune weave. . .give it to me, now. Dea took in a deep nervous breath, "what do you mean?" Her voice came out stronger than she felt. I mean. . . She felt the thing draw closer. Give me my rune. "I. .i-i" this time her voice quivered, betraying the alarm she felt within, "I d-don't have it--"

Rune isn't listening. One moment, his gaze lingers on me with a burning intensity that I can almost feel. The air between us cackles with a dangerous mix of tension—anger, hate and undeniable need as we growl at each other. Suddenly, Rune releases a sharp sigh and lunges for me faster than I can fathom, lifting me off the ground. The air in my lungs is ripped from me forcefully as my back hits the wall. I barely have time to recover as he suddenly nuzzles my neck. His lips brush against my collar bone, his voice a low rasp that sends shivers down my spine. "Don't fight it," he murmurs, his voice both commanding and guttural.

“I'm merely your beta, I can only suggest and support.” I clapped a hand on his shoulder, then stared out as the men began to separate and walk back to the castle. “You're more than my beta, you know that.” The words had hardly left my mouth when a runner came pounding up the steps and towards us, cloak whipping behind him. Brutus straightened, his hand on his spear. The man skidded to a halt before us, chest heaving. “Alpha Rune,” he panted. “A letter came for you from…”

Fane's lips twitched as he frowned and replied, "If you want to cheat, you'll have to be able to cheat in the first place. Who's going to help you cheat, and how will you cheat?" Fane's words seemed to cool down the panic in Rudy's mind a little. Fane was right, there was no way to cheat on a test like that. Even if he wanted to draw the runes following pictures, he would first need to know which book the runes came from. He could not copy them even if he wanted to! Thinking about that, Rudy's lips twitched as he almost cried. Just as Fane wanted to give him a word of advice, a sharp gaze suddenly shot over from the front.

I said softly and Rune bit his lip telling me he would take note of that. I rolled my eyes and set the table. There was another knock at the door and I eyed Rune. He asked me to watch the pancakes in the pan as he headed toward the front door. I flipped them and peeked out the kitchen door to see Rune standing there holding several letters. He had opened up one and was reading it. His brow had furrowed and I bit my lip and went back to take the finished pancakes out of the pan and added four more. Rune walked back into the kitchen rubbing his eyes and handed me the letter. It was gold script lettering on ink black paper. "What is it?" I asked before reading it.

“We need to focus.” The runes glowed brighter as we approached, their patterns shifting faster. It was a dizzying sight, and I had to fight the urge to look away. “What do we do?” I asked, my voice shaking. “Each rune represents a piece of the solution,” Althea explained, her hands hovering over the pedestal. “But they’re coded in ancient witch tongue. We have to decipher their meanings and align them correctly.” “Great,” I said, swallowing hard. “No pressure or anything.”
