Ryan POV. The dawn broke cool and clear, a stark contrast to the tumultuous night. Darren lay sprawled beside me on the makeshift bed of furs and blankets in my secluded cabin. He was still asleep, his breathing soft and even, his face slack with exhaustion. Bruises, faint but visible, flowered on his shoulders where my nails had dug in, and on his neck, the mark of my claiming bite still a stark red.

I tossed it back into the drawer and chose the other by default. "The beginning of the end" I read out from the cover, then paused it think about it for a second "Hmm...interesting" I said, flipping through to the first chapter. Uninterrupted, I finished the first chapter in minutes but somewhere in the middle of the second, Caleb brought me dinner. I ate to my fill and lay down supine, meditating on the unfolding storyline.

I hear Ryatt unshealth his sword, the metal singing an ancient song as the tip meets the stone tiles at my knees, and then the world twists into a depthless kind of darkness, taking my breath with it. ***
