It was near the end of the movie, in the particular half-awake state between sleep and waking, that Sadie stirred again, eyes barely open, and murmured, sleepy and unguarded and entirely without thinking, "Mom, is it over yet?"
The room went very quiet.
Sadie blinked, more awake now, some dawning realization crossing her small face as she registered what she'd said, her cheeks going pink. "I mean — sorry. I meant Ivy. I don't know why I said that."
"It's okay," Ivy said, quickly, gently, though her own heart was pounding hard enough that she was certain both of them could hear it. "It's okay, Sadie. You were half asleep. It happens."
