We had gotten lost multiple times, and we had to start over each time. But finally, we stumbled upon a hidden cave that led us to Sage's dwelling. It was nestled within the rocky crags, almost invisible to the eye. We approached it cautiously, not knowing what to expect. Sage greeted us with hostility. She was a young woman, not much older than Rosella, but she carried herself with an air of authority. Her hair was wild and unkempt, and her eyes held a deep weariness that made me wonder what kind of life she had been leading.

From the corner of my eye, I see Ragnar watching it all from the sidelines, like a messenger of death himself. A rogue tries to flee. Ragnar's scythe spins out of his hand, decapitating him, but he doesn't kill him, I notice, just as someone knocks me down and just like that, I'm carried into the heat of the battle again. Ryker, on the other hand, blurs between wolf and human, leaving dead men in his wake till the last of the rogues stands. "Who sent you?" Ryker asks. I wobble on my feet, completely exhausted but manage to keep the stray wolf firmly in a chokehold.

There’s something strikingly beautiful as we stand by a demolished altar watching Drex carry in a squirming Sage in one shoulder. Thud, thud, thud…comes his boots on the floor. Thump thump thump…comes my heart against my chest. It takes less than a minute for my brother to reach us and a second less to put Sage on her feet. Then the little beauty with the white hair and scathing eyes turns around… “Sage? What are you…what’s she doing here? What are you going to do with her? Tell me, how many bonds did you identify for yourself?” “Two, I know them both.” Sage nods and then grips my hands a little tighter before closing her eyes. I watch in silence as her eyes flit behind her eyelids. When she opens them again, the blue has faded into a milky white, and even the black of her pupil has gone, replaced by a very pale grey. It’s the most terrifying thing I have ever seen. I really hope that is now how I look when using the gift. “Interesting,” Sage hums, and then blinks her eyes until her normal eye colouring returns.

I heard Safia scream, then she began to laugh, and it destabilised the jinni. Safia walked out of the ring of fire naked. Her clothes were burned, but her skin... her skin was bronze. I had never seen anything like it. Her eyes were neon green, and her skin was flawless. All traces of age were gone; she looked as young as her daughter but with perfect skin. The jinni's eyes widened in fear. "Ruhun'Daji!" Aljanan Daji yelled, finally realising who her opponent was.

The moment I reached the bottom, the group turned toward me, their eyes meeting mine with a mix of recognition and something else—something I couldn’t quite place. “Luna,” Sage said, his voice soft but firm, and Ragnar followed suit, both of them bowing slightly, their heads low in respect. But as they turned away, I caught the flicker of something in Sage’s eyes. His cheeks were flushed, a deep pink that had nothing to do with the cold air of the night.

His abs were plump and well outlined, as if they had been crafted by the Goddess herself. “Princess…” I blinked away from his chest, palming my mouth. “Yes?” “If you didn't bring any extra clothes, you can have some of mine.” He said, and I nodded a response, fighting the urge to look down again. Sage lowered himself, taking off his sweatpants, while I looked away, waiting for him to finish. “Ready?” Sage asked again and this time I replied. “Yes.” Sage went first, shifting in less than half a second. His wolf was a mix of black and brown, with golden eyes, it was at least six feet tall, and it towered over me like a tree.

I can see broken people everywhere. Rue lights a black pillar candle, then closes her eyes. She cups her hands around the candle and whispers to herself for several moments as I finish my breakfast. Then she marks a sigil in the air over the candle, and black, smoky magic whips like a lasso around the wax. Seeing it makes me miss Sable, my best friend Ridge’s mate. She’s a hybrid shifter and witch, and she became like a little sister to me in the months before I left my pack lands. I haven’t spoken to either of them in more than two years.
