Sade’s POV The crisp autumn air wrapped around Sade as she stepped out of her car, the scent of burning leaves and pumpkin spice filling the air. The neighborhood was already decorated for Halloween, pumpkins on doorsteps, fake cobwebs clinging to porches, and skeletons posed in eerie grins. It was the season she used to love, the time of year she’d always gone all out for. But this year? She wasn’t in the mood for celebrating.

On Halloween, I was preparing the children’s area for the workshop when Mr. Sasagawa appeared, carrying a cardboard box in his botanical garden staff jacket. “Ms. Ono, will these do?” The box was packed with intricately carved miniature pumpkins. “They’re beautiful… Thank you so much.” We began arranging them along the top of the decorated bookshelves. Mr. Sasagawa helped, taking care not to disturb the origami decorations on the wall. Each pumpkin had a single letter carved into it. Placed in order, they spelled:

“You always miss the cake.” He laughed. “You’re too clever for me. I’ll try harder next time, I promise.” “Okay,” she grinned. “What did you bring me?” He held out the wrapped gift, and her eyes lit up. She eagerly tore the paper, revealing a glossy pink box. Inside was a handcrafted wooden jewelry case with delicate butterflies carved on the lid. The top opened to reveal a velvet-lined interior and a spinning ballerina that danced when wound up. “It’s so pretty,” she whispered. “Thank you, pumpkin.”

Slam my door shut, meet her at the tailgate, and march back where we just came from. She's not indecisive in the least when it comes to picking out her pumpkin. Not too big, not too small. One is tall and skinny, one is short and fat, and, apparently having three of something is a thing that's quite important when it comes to decorating, so she picks another one that's perfectly round on the front but has a wonky back that's pretty flat. Once we've paid, I carry two while she grabs the third and we bring them back to the pickup, put them on the floor of the backseat, and climb inside.

"What was his name, Casey?" Tears spilled over her lashes and trailed down her cheeks. And for the first time she was able to admit that she was no longer his captive. Even if he opened the bars to her cage, she wouldn't run. First of all, there was no way off this damn mountain without a helicopter license and second of all she was falling deeply in love with the only human being that seemed capable of understanding her cracked heart. "I called him Jack," she whispered, then a slow, sad grin spread across her face. "After Jack Skellington from the Nightmare Before Christmas. My favourite movie of all time."

They hadn’t noticed me yet, so I took a moment to appreciate the beautiful woman who belonged to me and her adorable child. Sunny nearly toppled over as she made her way forward with a heavy pumpkin in hand. When she spotted me approaching, Carys bent down to point me out to Sunny. The look on Sunny’s face as she noticed me was priceless; she sped up, seeming eager to get to me and so proud to be holding that pumpkin. It was a small one, but somehow loo

By late October, the weather grew cooler, and pumpkin-themed decorations began appearing frequently across the SU campus. Carved pumpkins dotted the lawns, the dining halls served roasted pumpkins and pumpkin soup, and pumpkin lanterns—decorated by someone unknown—adorned the apartment building entrances. The vibrant orange hue warmed the gradually bleak campus.
