Alaric just grins, wicked and brilliant. “Because it is.”

His voice dripped with sarcasm. Sarang giggled, the sound light and melodic, cutting through the tension. He laughed so heartily that Nathaniel’s stern expression wavered. A faint chortle escaped him, his cheeks tinged with the faintest blush. Sarang plopped down beside him, playfully poking Nathaniel’s cheek until a reluctant smile broke through. “There it is,” Sarang said, his grin widening. “You look more handsome when you smile for me.” “I’m always handsome,” Nathaniel quipped, “even when I cry.”

Her grin stretched even further, triumphant. “Get. On. Your. Knees.”

The corners of his mouth tip into a dark grin, one that tells me that nothing good is coming my way. “Then, you better be quiet."

My tone questions without having to say anything else. I turn back to look at him, the sweet smile from moments ago is gone. Replaced with pure sin slashed across his full lips. I watch his pupils dilate just slightly, enough to tell me whatever the grunting is, it’s no bad thing. “Frankfurter, you’re gonna love this.”

His lips curled into a grin. “Deal.”

Absolute, undeniable shock. His eyes widen, his jaw slackens almost imperceptibly. He looks at me, then back at the documents, his gaze darting between the two. His earlier composure crumbles, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated astonishment. For a split second, I glimpse a raw vulnerability in his eyes, a flicker of something similar to fear, quickly masked. Then, the shock dissipates, replaced by a slow, spreading grin. It starts small, a twitch at the corner of his mouth, then stretches wider, revealing perfectly aligned teeth. It’s a terrifying grin, devoid of warmth, full of triumph, and something sinister.

Ryan rested his arm on the armrest, leaning back while crossing his legs propping it on his other leg. Mr. Sardines stopped smoking for a spur of the moment, and again continued placing the tip of the cigar against his lip, with his sarcastic laughter smoke began to ooze out,"Mi piace come parli. he went on in that unnerving tone. Oh crap. What exactly did he know about my journey? About Bree and our little spirit world mixup? A million more questions bubbled up, but before I could get a word out, he flashed me this unsettling grin. Like he was trying to look friendly but his mouth... wasn't quite made for smiling. That unnerving grin of his stretched even wider, like a snake unhinging its jaws. "Though I imagine our guest has far more questions than can be sated by broth."
